Admire the shape and learn the legend of Meotoiwa, a sacred geological feature. The two rocks jut out from the ocean--the larger representing the husband, and the smaller his wife--with the relationship between the two taking on a spiritual quality in the beliefs of worshippers at the local Shinto shrine. Joined by a heavy "shimenawa" rope (a rice straw rope used in Shinto rituals), the rocks form a striking shape just off from the coast.
I came to visit Ise Grand Shrine. It was a storm yelling that the typhoon had just passed, but I watched it with the rough seas hitting the marital rocks. If the weather is good, it will look different again, won't it?View original -
more »
In the sea in front of Futami Kodama Shrine in Futamiura, there was a marital rock. Two rocks, large and small, are connected by a shime rope. It is a scenery that I have seen many times in books and on TV. What I didn't understand in books and on TV was a frog statue next to Futami Kodama Shrine, a beach near the marital rock. It is said that it is a god messenger of Sarutahiko Okami who is enshrined in Sarutahiko Shrine.View original
