Whichever part of the crimson structure of Hinomisaki Shrine you look at, you'll find ornate carvings of various birds, dragons, and other traditionally symbolic creatures. Designated a nationally important cultural property, the shrine is estimated to have been established sometime between the sixth and eighth centuries, with its current structures having been rebuilt in the 17th century. Look out for the sacred land mass 100 m (328 ft) off shore, which serves as a breeding site for black-tailed gulls and has been designated a natural monument. You can also see the tallest masonry lighthouse in the country, standing around 0.5 km (0.3 mi) from the site.     The Hinomisaki Shrine is somewhat hidden and not as touristy. I first saw this shrine while driving to the lighthouse. It was beneath the road near the coast surrounded by nature. Once I saw this, I.....  more »

    Like most shrines. If you have seen several already you won't miss not having been here. Still nice to look at and close to the coast and light house.
