  鹿児島で１番に有名な偉人、西郷隆盛さんを奉った神社です。 立派な神社でお参りに来る人がたえません。 また隣の南洲公園には西郷隆盛さんの資料を多数展示した西郷南洲顕彰館があり神社のお参りに来たらここも見学することをおすすめします。 子供の頃は近くの知り合いの家に行くと必ずここに連れてきてもらいここから眺める桜島の景色が懐かしいです。 南洲神社の敷地内には西郷隆盛さんの墓地がある南洲墓地もあり西郷隆盛以外にも西南戦争に参加した2000人以上の人たちが奉られたお墓が700基以上建てられてあり、墓石は皆皇居の方向を向いて建ててあるそうです。
