Kōtoku-in, Kamakura

Admire the monumental statue of Kōtoku-in, one of the largest Buddha figures in Japan. The towering bronze statue dates back to the 13th century and sits outside a Buddhist temple in the small town of Kamakura. Enjoy the view of the 13.3 m (43.8 ft) tall Amitabha Buddha, an imposing sight dominating peaceful temple grounds. For a small fee, you can venture inside the hollow statue to see the elaborate structural work that makes up this gargantuan monument. • Buddhas turn out to be different, and I didn't know it! This one, the most famous in Kamakura, is called Amida Buddha. It is the second tallest (only 11 meters) in Japan, but the largest Buddha sits in Nara (see my other post). But the Kamakur Buddha is much older (he is 800 years old!). Two years ago, when I was in Kamakura for the presentation of my previous detective novel, Amida Buddha was closed for restoration. But when I visited Kamakura in May this year with my new novel, the famous Amida Buddha was rediscovered and shone like a new biep:-) Kamakura leaves a pleasant impression. In this cozy Japanese seaside city lives the creative intelligentsia: artists, writers, artists. I have already made friends with some of them and i look forward to seeing each other again!

  • Worth a visit if you're less than 1-2 hours away. There is a beach and shopping streets nearby so it makes a good day trip. The shrines are a must see and there is a traditional atmosphere in the area...  more »

  • A long way to go there from Tokyo.. Nearly two hours Comparatively small place but worth going there. An astonishing crafting method of the Great Buddha is explained if you go inside the statue with a low entrance fee. Just 20 Yen Love the place ❤
  • A must visit if you are in Tokyo! It is not far away (~40min from Tokyo Central). The temple and the Buddha statue can be seen in around 30min. The town (Kamakura) is a nice place to wander around and with some additional temples that could compliment the visit. The beach is also nice to go around if you have time.
