Venture past the ornate street gates and carved lions into Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown) for a quick change of scenery, culture, and cuisine. The neighborhood dates back to the 1860s, when Kobe's ports first opened to foreign trade and the earliest Chinese immigrants moved into the city. A large population of Chinese still live there, and the brightly colored signs, many restaurants, and shops selling Chinese imports and souvenirs preserve their distinct heritage. This is the area between Motomachi Arcade (2km) and Harborland. It is an historic part of Kobe. To the North mountain side is a super arcade. To the south seaside is Merikan Park (American Park... more »

Second best Chinatown in Japan, right behind Yokohama for many. It’s not a super big area which is nice, and you can walk around pretty easily! more »

Incredibly busy! I was not sure where to look as your attention will definitely stray everywhere. It's very bright and colourful around here. Lots of red and traditional Chinese buildings. It's pretty loud and crowded in my opinion. Too much going on, but still worth the visit! It's a different vibe than other "normal" Japanese streets. Lots of different foodie smells as well. I'm not sure, but the prices seem a bit more expensive compared to other places? It's a tourist attraction after all, and business is definitely booming. You can find anything here from soup dumplings to pork buns. I'm sure most shopkeepers can speak perfect Chinese as well. I heard the majority of people speak Chinese, and lots of signs were in Chinese as well. Very interesting!

A market full of goodies, lots of seafood, fresh and food you've never seen. The market winds down many small streets with lots of restaurant and lots of shops. An area where you can spend hours without paying attention. Highly recommended
