Kifune Shrine, Kyoto

4.4
Head into the mountains to the north of the city to find Kifune Shrine, a peaceful Shinto shrine. Legend has it that a goddess rowed a yellow boat upriver from Osaka into the mountains here, and that the shrine was built where her boat journey ended. Upon entry to the shrine, dedicated to the god of water and rain, you'll receive a fortune written on a paper slip that shows its message when wet. The steps leading up to the main shrine, flanked on either side by traditional lanterns, create a captivating scene, so remember to bring your camera. With our custom trip planner, Kyoto attractions like Kifune Shrine can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • We came for a short time only to visit the shrine, so sadly we couldn’t fully enjoy the amazing atmosphere, the towering forest trees, the quiet river and the peaceful road leading back to Kibuneguchi station. I wonder how incredible this place must be at night with all those lanterns on.
  • Definitely worth it if you're nearby Kyoto. It's a little far but it's a nice day trip. It's a little tiring if you want to climb the mountain, so be aware of that. Beautiful views, nice shrines and not crowded as other Shrines.
