#3 of 4,796 in Things to do in Tokyo
Symbolic of Japan’s economic rebirth after World War II, Tokyo Tower stands proudly at a height of 333 m (1,092.5 ft), defining the Tokyo skyline with its orange and white stripes. This lattice steel tower, modeled on the Eiffel Tower, holds a communications tower and two observation decks. Reach the decks by elevator or by climbing the 600 stairs to take in a view of the city below. Directly beneath the tower, visit the four-story building that houses restaurants, souvenir shops, and an indoor amusement park. • I went to visit the Tokyo Tower at night with my boyfriend, but while I was expecting a gorgeous night view, I was left pretty disappointed. The tower actually projects many holographic animations on the glass windows so there’s an entire section that essentially can’t be viewed and acts more as a projector screen. If that’s your cup of tea, you may enjoy it - and many people did given the crowd of people videotaping the show - but I was really looking forward to seeing the city from an aerial view and was disappointed by the holographic images and loud music. Also, because the top floor is still well lit, the lights are reflected against the windows so you can’t really take great pictures without seeing your reflection or the wall behind you. Perhaps it’s better during the daytime, and I’ll definitely try that next time, but I would advise against visiting at night if you’re looking forward to seeing the city at night.
  • We went up to the main observation deck at night and had beautiful views of the city. Definitely worth a visit. We did this on our last night in Tokyo and it was a nice way to wrap up. There’s a little cafe where you can get snacks, ice creams, etc, so this is a nice way to appreciate the views for a little longer.
