Visit the oldest church in Japan at Ōura Church. Built in 1864 to honour the 26 martyrs of Japan crucified back in the 16th century, the church remains a significant monument to the Christians of Japan, as whole Christian communities came out of hiding following its construction. Steep stairs lead you up to the church building, with a striking white marble statue of Mary in front of the entrance. Inside, you can read information in English elaborating on the history of the church, as well as a small museum displaying artifacts that survived religious persecution. Apart from the historical importance itself, the building is not particularly significant (architecturally speaking). Besides it's a 1000 yen ticket. Better take a picture from the outside.
The entrance fee is 1000 yen, which is quite pricey, but do come here if you want to learn more about the history of Christianity in Japan! There's a lot of interesting facts about the growth of Christianity and how that affects many aspects of Japanese culture. No need to worry about not being able to read Japanese, they provide a good and detailed brochure in English about this place, and related information regarding the subject around Nagasaki.
