Hōzen-ji Temple, Osaka

4.1
#5 of 320 in Historic Sites in Osaka
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Landmark
In the midst of a bustling city and neon lights, Hōzen-ji Temple offers some quiet respite. Founded in 1637 by a monk named Kinnun, the temple honors the god of fury, Fudomyoo. Devotees come to worship and splash the deity, resulting in a thick layer of soft moss covering the statue. A stone-paved alley surrounds the small shrine, while numerous restaurants, pubs, and bars nearby keep the ambiance vibrant. Highlights include a stone tablet and signs with haiku poems by artists and poets who used to frequent the area. • Beautiful little temple that I stumbled onto walking down a lane. Osaka is full of surprises not advertise to the public.
  • The Buddhism images covered in years of greens are revered by lots of people - not only locals but a queue of tourists - who throws a scoop of water for some purification purport.
