Kibitsu Shrine, Okayama

4.3
Architecture enthusiasts will not want to miss Kibitsu Shrine, the sole example of Kibitsu-Zukuri style architecture. Observe the structure's unique gabled roof, huge wooden pillars, and ornate metal fixings. Take a walk along the 400 m (1,312 ft) covered corridor that traverses the grounds. Don't miss the cedar tree in the serene gardens, reputedly 1,000 years old. • Nice temple complex in a rural area. Not the most exciting place in Japan but more authentic than the bigger tourist destinations.
  • Good place to take a break on the Kibiji Cycle Trail. It’s a series of shrines and temples with beautiful timber walkways that link them together. Quiet and peaceful as the grounds are quite extensive. There is also a small series of shops at the base of the steps to the temple where you can get drinks and snacks.
