For ages, the three enshrined Shinto gods at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine have protected the nation, people on sea voyages, and patrons of waka poetry. This grand Sumiyoshi-zukuri style shrine serves as headquarters of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines scattered throughout Japan. Because of the three gods' purposes, the shrine is a pilgrimage site for students of military arts, mariners, and poets. Observe how locals swarm the place, especially during New Year's Eve, to make wishes and pray for prosperity. Examine the shrine's symbol--the vermilion-colored Taiko-bashi bridge--and simply relax in the serene ambience. This attractive spot is really gorgeous. It is a very old shrine, which was already mentioned in Nihonshoki. You can see the red bridge and took photo from this bridge. more »

I'm a little hesitant to write a review of Sumiyoshi Taisha. i feel like it's a hidden gem in that there are very little tourists that come through here. But, on the other hand I want to share what a great shrine this is. Despite how close this neighborhood is to the more bustling areas of Osaka, this area is calm and has a small town feel. Likewise, my visit to the shrine was peaceful and calm as there weren't very many people around. The grounds are also beautiful and impeccably manicured. I liked that you have the option of crossing that very steep arched bridge or stone bridges over the water way. The combination of water, trees, and light really make this place feel mystical.

The temple compound was large and pleasant. The temple grounds were kept very clean and the drum bridge especially was very attractive. The shrines inside were beautifully made and their design was unique compared to the other Japanese shrines. The garden was also well kept and neat. This place is a great place to visit since it takes you on a world of its own with a peaceful serene atmosphere in the middle of the city. I highly recommend visiting this location especially on festivals and the new year.
