Once a vital part of the city's bustling port, Otaru Canal serves as a popular destination for waterside strolling and enjoying the outdoors. Wander along this restored historic canal, dating back to the early 20th century, to explore its many repurposed warehouses, which house restaurants, shops, and museums. You'll find the promenade lined with Victorian-style gas lamps, as well as numerous brick buildings from as early as the 19th century. Work out when and for how long to visit Otaru Canal and other Otaru attractions using our handy Otaru road trip site.

The canal is nothing great but it goes through the historic section of town where the museums are so you might as well take a walk along it while visiting the area more »
-
Canal itself is ordinary but the main retails street was lovely & peaceful We had fresh seafood lunch & afternoon tea in cafe more »

Arrive today about 5 pm. under strong snowing, so many people come to take a picture including with my group. Even so cold but for the nice scenery made nobody give up. Here also have many small gift shops for addict shoppers. Over all highly recommend.

We went during the snow festival and it was very pretty. Just be aware there will be a LOT of people. We saw attractions around 6-8pm because we had to catch a bus back to Sapporo and it's super crowded. If you're staying overnight it might be worth seeing the attractions after dinner - there might be less people. We were also there during the day and saw some of the staff fixing the decorations before night time. It makes me appreciate the scenery at night more because it takes a lot of manual work to maintain it.
