Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Sakyo

4.5
#8 of 79 in Parks in Kyoto
Take a tour of Shugakuin Imperial Villa, a set of three villas and associated gardens owned by the imperial family. Built between 1655 and 1659 by Emperor Gomizuno, the complex features three main buildings, all showcasing different aspects of traditional Japanese imperial architecture, including dark wood facades, sliding doors, elevated tatami mats, and painted wall panels. The sprawling park that surrounds boasts plentiful natural sights: waterfalls, woods, and ponds, as well as enclosed areas made into fine examples of traditional Japanese gardens. Though entry to the buildings is not allowed, many remain open so visitors can see inside as part of the tour. • I went by bicycle. There is no bicycle storage, but i was allowed to stop in the space in front of the reception. I made a reservation online a week before i visited, but i was able to make a reservation because of the off-season. Even though it was in the off-season, the fresh green was beautiful in June, and some people were planting rice, and it was a peaceful atmosphere. It is a course with a good slope, but it also takes time to take a break on the bench on the way. The number of visitors was small compared to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and i was able to hear the explanation of the guide well. The guide was a big brother of the rough feeling about 30's and enjoyed it. Personally, I like blue meveniji, so I feel a little sweaty about an hour's walk, so I think the first half of June is the time to recommend it.

  • You need to apply in advance. The person of the Imperial Household Agency is guided, and the garden is beautiful about 40 minutes, and the photography is OK, too. Because there is a distance to walk, shoes that are easy to walk are good.

  • Every detail in this Imperial garden was so perfect that I felt some dizziness. Too much, isn’t it? Every corner, even single tiny stone, and glass and moth seemed to be calculated. All these efforts make me feel mixedly the laborious work of labors. Anyway, sturdiness of Imperial properties I saw, even though the builder insisted to design the garden humbly.
  • A large Japanese Loyal Family's summer palace complex with typical but well-arranged landscape and gardens.
