Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture

4.2
#1 of 91 in Parks in Shiga Prefecture
One of the 20 oldest lakes in the world, dating back to 4 million years ago, Lake Biwa holds an enormous cultural and historical significance for the country. References to the iconic lake can be found in numerous great works of literature, especially in poems and stories about the great battles that have been fought in its vicinity. If you visit during summer months, you’ll see "hanabi" (fireworks above the lake), while you can also join an annual marathon that has taken place by the lake since 1962. Take a walk on the beach bordered by pine trees, have a picnic, go swimming, and enjoy the views by the clear water. • I took a trip alone to Biwa because it was the best attraction in the region. I remember I did this script from Nagoya to Kyoto. There's Hikone Castle on the way to enjoy it too. The lake is well used by young people to bathe, but there were plenty of Brazilians doing churrasquinhos around. In the corner, people fishing. I went in the summer. Very cool because it is fresh and calm water without waves. Although it looks like a beach.

  • I was able to enjoy a very beautiful scenery than Expected. It was hot because it was a visit in August, but I took a sightseeing boat. It is recommended.

  • Spectacular lake. Accessible from Kyoto station by JR line
  • A beautiful lake that needs to be cycled around to enjoy the various sightseeing spots. You may not see them all, but soaking in the sights and sounds along the lake is good enough. As the haiku goes: "Seven views obscured, but in the mist, I hear the bells of Mie."
