  • We did the Dewa Sanzan hike over 3 days during monsoons in August. We took the afternoon bus from Tsuruoka and hiked to the 9th station rest house on Gas-san where we stayed overnight at the mountain....  more »

  • Be wary of sun during August. A wonderful hike, but it takes longer than you might thing, as the mountain gets pretty busy.
  • Mount Gassan was on my list. I had a chance to hike to the top in the mid of July in 2019. It wasn’t the best weather but truly enjoyable. You can get there by bus during the season or by a car. The road to get the trailhead is extremely challenging. Be careful. The hike starts at the 8th station. There is a restaurant and resting area here. Bathroom and vending machines are also available. The view from this point is awesome but keep going you will be amazed. Just follow the path behind the restaurant. It is an easy start. You will walk on wooden path. The flowers and small lakes (or I should say paddles) make the walking fun. After about 20-30 min the steepness start. Although it is not very challenging trail I had to walk on the snow time to time. It was raining and very windy. I couldn’t see even 10 min away. It got worse when it gets higher. There is a hut in the middle. You can have a rest here. Drinks and noodles are available, a little expensive though. The temple at the top is still active and you can see some praying people. Photo and video taking are forbidden here. I was planning to continue and visit the third peak of the Dewa Sanzan but the weather made me think twice. I used the same path to descend. The weather became better. It is a 3 hours trial but I made the peak in 2 hours. It depends on how fast you are.
