Trip Planner: Asia / Japan / Kyushu / Kagoshima Prefecture / Kumage-gun / Yakushima-cho / Jōmon Sugi
A Japanese cedar thousands of years old, Jōmon Sugi has been named a World Heritage Site. Standing at 1,280 m (4,200 ft) above sea level, it is also the largest tree on the island and is often a central part of a solid day's hike in the Yakushima Mountains. If trees could talk, this 30 m tall (100 ft) Jomon cedar would tell a history of the world since the Stone Age. Take a guess at its age--scientists believe it to be between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. Jōmon Sugi reviews
Jomonsugi is the oldest tree in Japan and one of the most popular spots in Yakushima. While reaching this takes a long time, it's only viewable from the distance. It was just good to stare at. - This.... more »
We were very lucky with the weather. It was a warm cloudy-sunny day in November with some fog defending as we approached Jomon-sugi. It added an effect to make it look even more majestic. For the... more »
This is an amazing hike, despite incessant rain! But I have given 3 stars as the transport is terrible to get to and from the start of the trail - we were told to get the 04.48am bus to be able to finish the walk in time for the last bus, but managed to finish the hike in 7 hours (and we are not fit walkers) then had to wait 2 hours for the shuttle bus and another hour for the connecting bus back to Miyanoura - it made a very long, cold, wet and tiring day! It was torrential rain during our walk, which is fine, but meant you had to wait very cold and wet and there is no cafe to keep warm in, or even enough places to sit after the hike to wait for the shuttle bus. My advice is to check the bus timetables as there is a 4 hour gap in shuttle buses (around 11.00 to 15.00) and there were a lot of freezing cold people waiting for longer than us for the bus - it made a very bad end to the day!
A hike that many may consider to be the most popular on the island. Definitely can be done within 6-8 hours, and without a tour guide. Highly advise starting around 5-6:00 in the morning just to be safe. Tickets for the bus ride to the starting point can be bought at the bottom parking lot. Most of the hike is straightforward, while the last mile and a bit gets a bit steeper and tougher. Bring some snacks and beverages for hydration as there are rest stops a long the way and places to go sit down and eat at the top (please remember to take your trash home!!). Beautiful and breath-taking, rain or shine, an absolute must experience for all.
