Navigate a trail that works its way beneath a thick, verdant canopy of ancient cedar trees on Seibu Trail. The trail cuts through Yakushima island, which features huge swathes of protected nature reserves, including a 18,958 ha (46,844 ac) UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. Being an unspoiled natural wonderland, the area around the trail abounds in wildlife, among which Yakushika deer and Yakushika monkeys roam and climb in great numbers. Make sure to bring your camera to capture photos of these distinctive animals, who generally don't mind by human attention.   • Deer and macaque haven. Another harrowing drive but so worth it. The macaques do not move off as you approach so you have to drive around them. Stunning views all around. One of the best experiences.....  more »
  • Don't run over the monkeys and deer who have as much right to the road as we have. The Seibu Trail is the 26.5 km of highway (paved road) from Cape Nagata to Ohkawa no taki Waterfall on Yakushima's.....  more »
