At the higher altitudes of Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Siberian winds cake trees in ice and snow to create "snow monsters," a rare sight that gives the destination an otherworldly aspect. With a 305 hectare (754 acre) area predominantly made up of beginner and intermediate runs, the resort makes a good place for those newer to the sport to hone their skills in a dramatic and picturesque location. If you're looking to take lessons, be aware that English tutelage is only offered privately. After carving it up on the slopes, head to the resort's hot spring facilities to give your muscles a well-deserved soak. In winter, a trip to the top of the mountain reveals the striking image of the illuminated snow monsters. Before you head to Yamagata, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Yamagata trip planner, to make sure you see all that Yamagata has to offer, including Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort.

  • Came here for four times already. Wonderful place for ski with so many rope ways. Yet, you gonna need luck to have good and sunny weather. Most of the time in January is snowing with heavy fog and big wind. Hotels are all good, great service and food. Don't miss it.
  • -20 with windchill and so windy at the mountain top. Queue up for Gondola 1 & 2 at least an hour during the holiday since many traveller going up for snow monster only. Lifts and slopes set up for the mountain are quite confusing. Could not find changing room at the base. Outdoor hot spring are wonderful here.
