Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / South Island / Marlborough Region / Picton / Edwin Fox Maritime Museum
I beleive we are very lucky to have this historic treasure here in Picton that is currently registered as the 9th oldest ship in the world, older than the cutty sark and star of india...(just not as well known)! The Edwin Fox is also the last remaining convict ship that took convicts to Australia, the last surviving ship of The Dunbar Shipping Fleet, once the largest shipping fleet in the world and The Edwin Fox is also registered by The World Ships Trust as the oldest merchant ship in The world!!! It has been around the world a reported 34 times and has played a very important and versatile role in history...convicts, soldiers to the Crimean war, emmigrants to NZ, Chinese to Cuba to work the Cane Fields, Tea and Beer routes between India and London, opium to San Francisco, its seen births, deaths, storms and disease!!Discover how to plan a Picton trip in just a few steps with Inspirock's itinerary builder.
The Story of the saving of The Edwin Fox is amazing in itself being brought for a shilling by Mr Norman Brayshaw...saving it from a watery grave....come and read the tales for yourself.....
Edwin Fox Maritime Museum Reviews
Really interesting to see this old ship in safe hands. Well worth a visit. Video presentation very good. Helpful staff to. more »
The Edwin Fox, formerly a convict transport ship, is the last of its kind in existence. The ship can be viewed from a sheltered dry dock next to the museum or accessed through entry to the museum... more »
It's a nice idea to build a museum around a old ship wreck. They presented and prepared the history of the Edwin Fox in a really beautiful way. It was cool to actually go and explore the ship wreck and how the crew or passenger lived during the 3-4 month travel from the UK to New Zealand
The ship and museum were amazing.... great place for kids as long as they don't get excited or have fun because the staff are rude towards parents who have happy kids . Very disappointed.
