Pyongyang
Capital of Willows
Built from the ground up after the Korean War, Pyongyang impresses with its Soviet-era buildings and monuments to modern leadership. While the name of this city literally translates to "Flat Land," or "Peaceful Land," it was historically known as "Capital of Willows" for the sheer volume of willow trees, many of which still stand today. Originally founded in 1122 BCE under the Tangun Dynasty, Pyongyang has suffered destruction more than once in recent history, notably during the First Sino-Japanese War and Korean war. Soviet aid helped rebuild the capital, as evidenced by the predominent Socialist Classical architecture that makes a statement in heavy, concrete lines. Expect to do your sightseeing in Pyongyang exclusively with a guide, and keep your eye out for glimpses of everyday life in between the monumental landmarks. When using our North Korea road trip planning tool, you're building your holiday based on your own interests, visitor reviews, and the informed opinions of our well-traveled writers.
