Stretching over 1 sq km (0.6 sq mi), Pyongyang Zoo plays home to over 5,000 wild animals and a total of 650 species. Don't miss the elephants, the star attraction, all descended from an elephant presented by the late president of Vietnam. As many as 400 other species also came as gifts from foreign citizens. Enjoy the aquarium and reptile house, as well as the sections with baboons and lemurs. Among the more unusual collections are those of domestic cats and dogs, some of which once belonged to the supreme leader of North Korea (the display makes a more sense once you learn people can't keep dogs as pets). Be prepared to see some of the animals living in less than perfect conditions. On the other hand, you'll have the chance to interact with locals in an usually relaxed environment.     Are displayed in this large, well landscaped, but old fashioned zoo environment. The cages that housed domestic cats upset me more than anything else. They needed to be at home on someone's bed not...  more »
