Triumphal Arch, Pyongyang

#9 of 28 in Things to do in Pyongyang
Monument · Tourist Spot
Stop and observe the impressive architecture of Triumphal Arch. The second tallest triumphal arch in the world, topped only by Mexico's Monumento a la Revolución, the 60 m (200 ft) tall, 50 m (160 ft) wide structure was built to commemorate the country's resistance to Japan between 1925 and 1945. Clearly inspired by Paris' Arc de Triomphe, it displays Roman influences combined with a three-tiered roof, reminiscent of Buddhist temple design. The arch supposedly contains dozens of rooms, balustrades, observation platforms and elevators, though these parts do not seem to be accessible. Bring a camera along to capture this imposing structure set on surreal large roads free of traffic.
