Belém Tower, Lisbon

A World Heritage Site, Belém Tower played an important role in Portuguese exploration during the Age of Discoveries. View the native beige-white limestone used in this Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style. King John II commissioned a defense system to be built at the end of the 15th century. The tower was not built until later, under King Manuel I, and was finally completed in 1519. Though the tower has seen many changes and additions to its original structure, it is still most famous for its beautiful 15th century architecture. As you explore, you'll discover the historical value of this site, which served as a defense at the mouth of the Tagus river and as a prison to many over several centuries. With our custom trip planner, Lisbon attractions like Belém Tower can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Great place for an exciting walk. The tower is impressive with its grandeur and architectural beauty. This historic place can be admired for a long time, especially at dawn and sunset. The waterfront is big enough to walk around, though there are plenty of tourists. I recommend visiting, admiring and just taking a walk with family or friends, a confident walk along the waterfront will give you a great mood and pleasant memories.
  • Great little historical tower. Check out all the carved decorations on pillars in the inner courtyard. They say only 120 people are allowed in at a time. I know that the traffic lights system controlling the spiral staircase to the top of the tower is not fit for purpose. Apart from that it is a wonderful building but very busy. We took the 15E tram there from Central Lisbon. It was packed. Remember your 50 cent coins for the WC if you can find them. Go back into town for food. There are nice cafes next to McDonald's
