Big Tree Trail, El Yunque National Forest

4.6
#2 of 7 in Trails in Puerto Rico
Bring your hiking boots and trek across the 1.4 km (0.8 mi) Big Tree Trail as you enjoy the sites and sounds of nature. Enjoy the 200-to 300-year-old trees that once filled the entire national park as you make your way through the lush green rainforest. Listen to the sound of local warblers singing while you cross one of many clear mountain streams. The asphalted trail is moderate in difficulty, has some steep climbs, and is full of covered picnic areas. It leads to a beautiful 10 m (35 ft) waterfall, which cascades down into an exquisite little pool. Go for a rewarding swim in the pool following your hike. • The hike is short, but there are lots posts about vegetation and animals in the forest. We saw some chickens there.  more »
  • MINE FALLS via BIG TREE TRAIL (km 10.2): is one of 2 possible to reach the mine FALLS cascade paths. We were informed that it was a slightly longer path but with greater ease by which opted for this. We walk about 20 minutes to get to the waterfall, the road is very cute with abundant vegetation. We parked the car indicates where the BIG TREE TRAIL sign.

  • Went today February 22, 2019 and a large part of El Yunque is closed still due to damage from the Hurricane including the Big Tree Trail, the Welcome Center and many of the bathrooms and other trails. You can drive and see the overviews from the road. Juan Diego Creek was the only real waterfall with a pool that we could walk up to. It was nice easy walk from the road. We were also able to see La Coca Falls from the road but it is not big enough to swim in or get under!
  • Beautiful trail but currently closed 2018
