Feel the weight of iron shackles at La Maison des Esclaves, part of a World Heritage Site and a memorial to Atlantic slave trade that once took place on Goree Island. Pass through the "Door of No Return," through which slaves boarded slaver ships that took them to overseas plantations halfway around the world. Built in 1776 with two curved staircases, the pink two-story house features a number of exhibits and tables describing the dishonorable trade that separated generations of families. You can examine shackles, whips, flintlocks, and other equipment used for enslavement, and see a statue of a freed slave holding broken shackles--a symbol of his liberation.
