#2 of 9 in Historic Sites in Krabi Province
Historic Walking Area · Historic Site
Stroll along the beach, browse the souvenir shops, and eat freshly caught seafood at Lanta Old Town, an ethnically diverse area with Chinese merchants, local Thai fishing families, and an ancient Sea Gypsy community. You can catch a long-tail boat tour of the island or a mangrove tour from the waterfront, or embark upon a snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, or kayaking trip. Many years ago, Ko Lanta's Old Town acted as an important port and commercial center for the island, providing a safe stopping place for vessels sailing between Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. • Nice little town with a variety of restaurants at reasonable prices (the ones on the water having great views) as well as stores selling various things from clothes to spices. It's like what I imagine some small California beach towns would've been like in the 50s and 60s before everything got so over commercialized. Not a must see but worth a visit if you're here for 2 or more days and need things to do besides laying on the beach.
  • Old Town is absolutely unique. It dates back up to 300 years when the Chinese came to trade with locals - many of them Sea Gypsies. For this reason, many of the old teak buildings are on stilts over the water. Many local craft shops & lovely little cafes. Not to be missed when visiting Lanta
