The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Get some historical perspective at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nijo Castle. Go for a jaunt from Kyoto to Dotombori to see Dotombori about 1h 10 min away. And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Toji, wander the streets of Gion, and steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple.

On the 2nd (Thu), enjoy the sand and surf at Sunayama Beach, kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach, then enjoy the sand and surf at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then snap pictures at Irabu Ohashi, and finally head outdoors with Toguchi no Hama. On the next day, visit a coastal fixture at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse, don't miss a visit to East Henna Cape, then snap pictures at Ikema Ohashi Bridge, and finally discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Miyakojima takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or do a combination of bus and flight. Expect somewhat warmer temperatures when traveling from Kyoto in April; daily highs in Miyakojima reach 77°F and lows reach 68°F.
