The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Popular historic sites such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Osaka Castle are in your itinerary. Step out of Kyoto with an excursion to Dotombori in Dotombori--about 1h 10 min away. Next up on the itinerary: explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, take a stroll through Gion, and get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. In May in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 29°C during the day and 17°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 28th (Tue) so you can catch the train to Hiroshima.
