Start off your visit on the 17th (Tue): see the interesting displays at Museum of Oriental Ceramics, step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle, then view the masterpieces at Hankyu Umeda Gallery, and finally wander the streets of Dotonbori.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Gion and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Your inner history buff will appreciate Nijo Castle and Kinkaku-ji. There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, shop like a local with Nishiki Market, examine the collection at Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan, and contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple.

Kyoto is very close to Osaka. In September in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 33°C during the day and 23°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 21st (Sat) so you can go by car to Takayama.
