Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Start off your visit on the 15th (Fri): steep yourself in history at Takayama Jinya, then explore the galleries of Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato), then take in the pleasant sights at Norikura Summit Tatamidaira, and finally get your bearings at Takayama City Hall. Here are some ideas for day two: admire the sheer force of Osakacho Waterfalls, then stop by Hida Bussankan, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Shirakabe Dozogai, and finally examine the collection at Takayama Showa Museum.
