The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Visit Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Tenkai Inari Shrine for their historical value. Get a sense of the local culture at Komyozen-ji Temple and Kamado Shrine. Explore Fukuoka's surroundings by going to Tosu Premium Outlets (in Tosu) and Kobo Tottan (in Itoshima).
