As the political and cultural capital of China, Beijing stands at the heart of Chinese history, buzzing with the energy of its high population density and centuries of importance.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Qianmen Main Street Mall as well as Dashilan. Visit Mutianyu Great Wall and Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) for their historical value. Discover out-of-the-way places like Meridian Gate (Wu Men) and Back Lakes (Hou Hai). There's still lots to do: browse the exhibits of The Palace Museum, steep yourself in history at Gong Wang Fu, get engrossed in the history at Lama Temple (Yonghegong), and take some stellar pictures from Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang).

Xi'an

Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Tang Bo Art Museum and Niubeiliang Mountain Nature Reserve. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses and Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta). Go for a jaunt from Xi'an to Tongchuan to see Yaowang Shan Scenic Resort about 1h 30 min away. There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Guangren Temple, take in the dramatic scenery at Cuihua Mountain, and look for gifts at Muslim market.

You can fly from Beijing to Xi'an in 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. In March in Xi'an, expect temperatures between °C during the day and °C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) early enough to travel to Chengdu.

Start off your visit on the 6th (Mon): examine the collection at Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, get to know the fascinating history of The Bund (Wai Tan), thendelve into the lush surroundings at Huangpu Park, and finally look for all kinds of wild species at Shanghai Wild Animal Park.
