Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
We've included these beaches for you: Otago Beach and Iritahama Beach. Mount Fuji and Hakone Sekisho and Hakone Sekisho Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get out of town with these interesting Hakone-machi side-trips: Gotemba Premium Outlets (in Gotemba), Nature & Wildlife Tours (in Fuji) and Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine (in Fujinomiya). There's still lots to do: get outside with Inatori Ukiuki Beach, contemplate the long history of Shuzen-ji Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, and take an in-depth tour of Hakone Shrine.

Traveling by combination of train and bus from Tokyo to Hakone-machi takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Tokyo in August, plan for little chillier days in Hakone-machi, with highs around 29°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 26°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 9th (Sun) so you can travel to Kyoto.

Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Dotonbori are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Kinkaku-ji and Nijo Castle. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Kyoto: Koji Kinutani Tenku Art Museum (in Osaka), Nara (Nara Park & Todaiji Temple Cultural Center) and Universal Studios Japan (in Konohana). There's still lots to do: take a stroll through Gion, see the interesting displays at Kyoto International Manga Museum, admire the masterpieces at Byodo-in Temple Museum Hoshokan, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple.

Getting from Hakone-machi to Kyoto by train takes about 4 hours. Other options: drive; or fly. When traveling from Hakone-machi in August, plan for somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto: temperatures range from 39°C by day to 29°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Wed) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.
