The 2013 European "Capital of Culture," Marseille is the largest port city on the breezy Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in France.
Get a sense of the local culture at Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde and Paroisse Cathédrale Saint Sauveur Aix-en-Provence. Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and Paul Cezanne’s Studio will appeal to history buffs. Venture out of the city with trips to Site Memorial du Camp des Milles (in Les Milles), Aix-en-Provence (Fondation Vasarely, Cours Mirabeau, & more) and Hyeres (Plage noire du Langoustier & Vieille Ville). Next up on the itinerary: admire the masterpieces at Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, wander the streets of The Panier, take in the exciting artwork at Maison de la Boule, and steep yourself in history at Maison de l'Echevin de Cabre.

Fort Lauderdale, USA to Marseille is an approximately 14-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of flight and train. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time to Central European Time, which is usually a 6 hour difference. Popular historic sites such as Palais des Papes and Chateau de Lourmarin are in your itinerary. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Carrieres des Lumieres and Abbaye Notre-Dame de Senanque. Explore Avignon's surroundings by going to Roman Theatre of Orange (in Orange), Abbaye de Saint-Hilaire (in Menerbes) and Chateau des Baux de Provence (in Les Baux de Provence). Take a train from Marseille to Avignon in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In August in Avignon, expect temperatures between 86°F during the day and 63°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Sun) to allow time to drive to Cannes.

Your inner history buff will appreciate La Croisette and Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild. Do your shopping at Rue d'Antibes and Galerie Gabel. Change things up with these side-trips from Cannes: Musee Escoffier de l'Art Culinaire (in Villeneuve-Loubet), Nice (Musée Marc Chagall, Palais Lascaris, & more) and Saint-Paul de Vence (in St-Paul-de-Vence).
