Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Osaka Castle and Dotonbori are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Museum of Oriental Ceramics and Mizuno Sportology Gallery will appeal to museum buffs. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Osaka: Nara (Todai-ji Temple, Nara National Museum, & more) and Higashinada (Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum & Kobe Fashion Museum). It doesn't end there: get in on the family fun at Universal Studios Japan and wander the streets of Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street.
