Escape the urban bustle at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and Shiga Kogen. The Japanease Memorial Museum of Skiing and Matsudai Kyodo Shiryokan will appeal to museum buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Yamanouchi-machi side-trips: Arts Festival of the Village of the Earth (in Tokamachi), Hokusai-kan (in Obuse-machi) and Onsen Resorts (in Kusatsu-machi).

Do some cultural sightseeing at Dotonbori and Nijo Castle. Let the collections at Todaiji Temple Cultural Center and Namikawa Yasuyuki Sippo Memorial Museum capture your imagination. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Osaka (Museum of Oriental Ceramics & Osaka Castle) and Nara Park (in Nara). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan, and take a stroll through Gion.

Traveling by train from Yamanouchi-machi to Kyoto takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of car, flight, and train. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Yamanouchi-machi in January, with highs in Kyoto at 10°C and lows at 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Sun) so you can take a train to Hiroshima.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum has been added to your itinerary. Start off your visit on the 22nd (Wed): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sofukuji Temple, then take a stroll through Shinchi Chinatown, then take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Inasa, and finally get engrossed in the history at Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Keep things going the next day: stroll through Takahama Beach, then head off the coast to Hashima Island, and then stroll around Nagasaki Peace Park.
