Kutchan-cho's reputation rests on two things: skiing and potatoes.
Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Fri): fly down the slopes at Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area and then hit the slopes at Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu Ski Place. On the next day, fly down the slopes at Niseko Hanazono Resort and then explore the activities along Lake Toya.

Skiing enthusiasts traveling in Japan should consider a trip to Hakuba-mura: tucked away in the Northern Alps, this village hosted several competitions during the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics.
Explore hidden gems such as Suginohara and Glad Quad. Change things up with these side-trips from Hakuba-mura: Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort (in Nozawaonsen-mura), Kusatsu-machi (Sainokawara Park & Onsen Resorts) and Okushiga Kogen Ski Area (in Yamanouchi-machi). There's lots more to do: visit Hakuba Jump Arena, hike along Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort, hit the slopes at Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort / Alpine Garden, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Hakuba.

You can do a combination of train and flight from Kutchan-cho to Hakuba-mura in 9 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or take a train. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Kutchan-cho in January: highs in Hakuba-mura hover around 3°C, while lows dip to -3°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel to Motobu-cho.

Formed by the gradual merging of several old fishing villages, today the island town of Motobu-cho boasts paradisal beaches of white sand, clear waters, and a rich array of wildlife.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Tropical Dream Center and Kouri Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Kunigami-son (Cape Hedo & Daisekirinzan) and Sefa-Utaki (in Nanjo). There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of Nakijin Castle Ruins, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Okichan Theater, go for a walk through Bise no Fukugi Tree Road, and make a trip to Okinawa Memorial Park Ocean Expo Park.

You can fly from Hakuba-mura to Motobu-cho in 10.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and ferry; or do a combination of bus, train, and ferry. Traveling from Hakuba-mura in January, expect Motobu-cho to be much hotter, temps between 22°C and 13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Iriomote-jima.

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
Start off your visit on the 12th (Sun): skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour, then take in the dramatic scenery at Pinaisara Falls, and then make a trip to Heritiera Littoralis Tree of Nakama River. Keep things going the next day: kick back and relax at Ida no Hama Beach, then head off the coast to Iriomote Island, then kick back and relax at Hoshisuna Beach, and finally paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour.

You can do a combination of flight and ferry from Motobu-cho to Iriomote-jima in 7.5 hours. Traveling from Motobu-cho in January, Iriomote-jima is a bit warmer at night with lows of 19°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Mon) so you can ride a ferry to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Step off the beaten path and head to Island Countryside Settlement and Rhizophoraceae Plant Community of Fukidogawa River. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Ishigaki: Kohama-jima (Kohama Island Information Center & Ubutaki Lookouts). There's lots more to do: take some stellar pictures from Cape Ongazaki, find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, explore the fascinating underground world of Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave, and walk around Kabira Park.

Ride a ferry from Iriomote-jima to Ishigaki in 1.5 hours. In January, daily temperatures in Ishigaki can reach 24°C, while at night they dip to 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 16th (Thu) to allow time to travel to Miyakojima.
