Kyoto

— 18 nights
The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Osaka (Universal Studios Japan, SpaWorld, &more), Kuromon Market (in Nippombashi) and Dotombori (Dotombori District & Ukiyokoji Street). There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, take a stroll through Arashiyama, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, and explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle.

To find reviews, where to stay, photos, and more tourist information, use the Kyoto driving holiday planning site.

If you are flying in from Australia, the closest major aiports are Osaka International Airport, Kansai International Airport and Chubu Centrair International Airport. In May, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 29°C, while at night they dip to 17°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Wed) so you can travel back home.
