Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Visiting Kabira Bay and Fusaki Beach will get you outdoors. Bring the kids along to Cape Hirakubozaki and Kondoi Beach. There's much more to do: get outside with Akashi Beach, find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, enjoy the sand and surf at Sukuji Beach, and take in the awesome beauty at Nosoko Mape.

Brisbane, Australia to Ishigaki is an approximately 17-hour flight. You'll gain 1 hour traveling from Brisbane to Ishigaki due to the time zone difference. Traveling from Brisbane in December, expect nights in Ishigaki to be about the same, around 20°C, while days are little chillier, around 26°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel to Hatsukaichi.

Hatsukaichi
The city of Hatsukaichi developed from a small market town, frequented by passing samurais during the Edo period.
On the 31st (Thu), contemplate the long history of Itsukushima Shrine Torii, steep yourself in history at Itsukushima Shrine, thenstep off the mainland to explore Miyajima, and finally stop by Itsukushima Gekijyo.

Traveling by combination of flight and train from Ishigaki to Hatsukaichi takes 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Traveling from Ishigaki in December, things will get colder in Hatsukaichi: highs are around 13°C and lows about 4°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get in touch with nature at Nara Park and Kyoto Isshu Trail, Higahiyama Fuahimi Inari Course. Kids will enjoy Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Asahiyaki (in Uji), Nara (Todai-ji Temple & Nigatsu-do Temple) and Himeji (Nishi no Maru, Himeji Castle, &more). The adventure continues: take a stroll through Dotombori District, shop like a local with Minami (Namba), take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, and step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle.

Take a train from Hatsukaichi to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and bus. In December, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 13°C, while at night they dip to 4°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Tue) to allow time to take a train to Fujinomiya.

Sitting on the southwest slopes of Mount Fuji, Fujinomiya makes a popular starting point for climbing trips to the famous mountain's summit.
Take a break from the city and head to Mount Fuji and Joren Waterfall. Family-friendly places like Nature & Wildlife Tours and Fujigawa Service Area - Inbound will thrill your kids. Change things up with these side-trips from Fujinomiya: Izu (Mt. Daruma, Nishiizu Skyline, &more) and Gotemba Premium Outlets (in Gotemba). You can take a train from Kyoto to Fujinomiya in 3.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or fly. Traveling from Kyoto in January, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be somewhat warmer in Fujinomiya, with lows of 5°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Fri) early enough to drive to Yamanouchi-machi.

The resort town of Yamanouchi-machi has plenty of contrasting, but complementary things going for it.
Get outdoors at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and Shiga Kogen. Explore Yamanouchi-machi's surroundings by going to Yamada Farm, Yamaboku Wild Snow Park (in Takayama-mura), Kijimadaira Ski Resort (in Kijimadaira-mura) and Nozawa Onsen (in Nozawaonsen-mura). There's more to do: get outside with Ichinose Diamond Ski Resort and fly down the slopes at Shigakogen Sun Valley Ski Area.
