Hakone-machi

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Step out of Hakone-machi with an excursion to Lake Kawaguchi in Fujikawaguchiko-machi--about 1h 30 min away. There's lots more to do: admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, stroll around Onshi Hakone Park, take some stellar pictures from Hakone Ropeway, and explore the activities along Lake Ashinoko.

Himeji

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Mon): admire the natural beauty at Koko-en, then explore the historical opulence of Himeji Castle, and then steep yourself in history at Nishi no Maru.

Kyoto

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Venture out of the city with trips to Osaka (Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan & Universal Studios Japan) and Dotombori District (in Dotombori).
