The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step off the beaten path and head to Tenryuji Temple and Koyasan Okunoin. Get some historical perspective at Tofuku-ji Temple and Eikando Zenrinji Temple. Venture out of the city with trips to Koyasan Danjo Garan (in Koya-cho), Byodoin (in Uji) and Nigatsu-do Temple (in Nara). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Toji, contemplate the long history of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and admire the natural beauty at Nanzen-ji Temple.

Start off your visit on the 6th (Sat): steep yourself in history at Takeda Castle Ruins, take in the spiritual surroundings of Gokurakuji Temple, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Street of Kinosaki Onsen, and finally test the waters at a local thermal spa. On your second day here, take in the views from Amarube Railroad Bridge, Sorano Eki and then observe the fascinating underwater world at Kinosaki Marine World.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Toyooka in 2.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or fly. Traveling from Kyoto in February, you will find days in Toyooka are little chillier (6°C), and nights are about the same (1°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Sun) early enough to drive to Kanazawa.

An old castle town largely unspoiled during World War II, Kanazawa features well-preserved architecture spread across a range of districts.
You'll explore and learn at Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum and Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen. Get a sense of the local culture at Daihonzan Eihei-ji Temple and Oyama Shrine. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kanazawa: Ainokura Gassho Community (in Nanto), Tenshukakau Observatory (in Shirakawa-mura) and Maruoka Castle (in Sakai). There's much more to do: see the interesting displays at D. T. Traveling by car from Toyooka to Kanazawa takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and train; or take a train. In February, daily temperatures in Kanazawa can reach 7°C, while at night they dip to 0°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Wed) so you can drive to Ise.

A spiritual center of Shintoism, Ise stands as a traditional city where visitors can see the roots of Japanese culture in a number of well-preserved natural and historic sites.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Thu): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Amanoiwaya, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Futami Okitama Shrine, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Tsukiyominomiya, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Ise Shrine Geku, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sarutahiko Shrine. On the next day, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Toba Aquarium, get engrossed in the history at Sengukan, and then contemplate the long history of Oharai-machi.

You can drive from Kanazawa to Ise in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Kanazawa in February, expect somewhat warmer with lows of 7°C in Ise. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Fri) early enough to travel to Onna-son.

Onna-son

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse and East Henna Cape.
