The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Former Takatori House and Imari Okawachiyama. Venture out of the city with trips to Yoshinogari Historical Park (in Yoshinogari-cho), Iki (Iki City Ikikoku Museum, Ikijima, &more) and Nagoya Castle Ruins (in Karatsu). Next up on the itinerary: walk around Maizuru Park, browse the different shops at JR Hakata City Amu Plaza Hakata, step off the mainland to explore Nokonoshima Island, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Seirakuji Temple.

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kigensugi Cedar and Gejibe no Sato. The adventure continues: explore the wealth of natural beauty at Yakusugi Land, trek along Seibu Trail, don't miss a visit to Jōmon Sugi, and enjoy the sand and surf at Nagata Inakahama.

Traveling by flight from Fukuoka to Yakushima-cho takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and ferry; or do a combination of car and ferry. Expect a bit warmer evenings in Yakushima-cho when traveling from Fukuoka in April, with lows around 59°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 26th (Sun) so you can travel to Kagoshima.

Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Chiringashima and Kirishima Open-Art Museum. Traveling by flight from Yakushima-cho to Kagoshima takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. Traveling from Yakushima-cho in April, expect a bit cooler with lows of 51°F in Kagoshima. Finish your sightseeing early on the 29th (Wed) so you can take a train to Kumamoto.

Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Oniyama Jigoku and Kamado Jigoku. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Beppu: Oguni-machi (Nabegataki Falls & Onsen Resorts), Usuki Sekibutsu (in Usuki) and Usa (African Safari & Usajingu Shrine). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Oka Castle Ruins, take in nature's colorful creations at Kuju Flower Park, and observe the fascinating underwater world at Oita Marine Palace Aquarium Umitamago.

Take a train from Kumamoto to Beppu in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Kumamoto in May, plan for slightly colder days and about the same nights in Beppu: temperatures range from 70°F by day to 62°F at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 5th (Tue) early enough to go by car to Nagasaki.
