Often described as the city of laptops and lederhosen, Munich is an international center of business, engineering, research, and medicine that still maintains a rich cultural heritage and age-old traditions.
Schloss Hohenschwangau and St. Peter's Church are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get some historical perspective at Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site and Neuschwanstein Castle. Change things up with these side-trips from Munich: Regensburg (Old Town, Alte Kapelle, & more), Mittenwald (St. Peter und Paul & Altstadt (Old Town) Mittenwald) and Fuggerei (in Augsburg). There's still lots to do: take in nature's colorful creations at Nymphenburg Palace, see the interesting displays at BMW Welt, steep yourself in history at Burgruine Eisenberg, and explore the world behind art at Alte Pinakothek.

Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Centro Storico and Historic Centre of San Gimignano. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Centro Storico di Siena and Basilica San Miniato al Monte. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Florence: San Gimignano 1300 (in San Gimignano) and Chiesa dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano (in Stigliano).
