As the political and cultural capital of China, Beijing stands at the heart of Chinese history, buzzing with the energy of its high population density and centuries of importance.
Bring the kids along to Beijing Botanical Garden and Ancient Observatory (Guguanxiangtai). Step off the beaten path and head to Niujie Mosque and Eight Great Temples (Ba Da Chu Park). The old city of Datong has an interesting and complicated history of development, sacking, and rebuilding.
Hengshan Hanging Temple (Xuankong si) has been added to your itinerary. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Huayan Temple of Datong and Chinese Sculpture Museum. Visit Shanhua Monastery and Datong City Walls for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Datong: Hunyuan County (Yong'an Temple & Mount Hengshan Scenic Spot).
