While often overshadowed by the Amalfi Coast's array of quaint villages, Salerno has become one of the region's main areas for culture and entertainment, while remaining relatively unmarked by tourism.
Get some historical perspective at Teatro Grande and Scavi di Stabia. Museum-lovers will get to explore Santuario di Montevergine and Museo Diocesano. Venture out of the city with trips to Rionero in Vulture (Cantine del Notaio & Museo del Brigantaggio), Church of St. Michael the Archangel (in Rapolla) and Valle delle Ferriere (in Amalfi). There's still lots to do: explore the ancient world of Area Archeologica di Venosa, pause for some serene contemplation at Cattedrale di Sorrento, explore the world behind art at Correale di Terranova Museum, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Santuario San Gerardo.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiport is Naples International Airport. October in Salerno sees daily highs of °F and lows of °F at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Mon) early enough to travel to Anacapri.
