Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants – and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Take a break from the city and head to Nevis Range Mountain Resort and Steall Waterfall. Step off the beaten path and head to Inveraray Jail and Ariundle Oakwood National Nature Reserve. Change things up with these side-trips from Fort William: Castle Stalker (in Appin), Inveraray Castle (in Inveraray) and Highland Titles Nature Reserve (in Duror). There's still lots to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Ben Nevis, contemplate the long history of Glenfinnan Viaduct, appreciate the views at Glencoe, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Saint Andrew's Church.
