Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
You've now added Xi'an Bell Tower to your itinerary. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta) and Xi'an Museum. Museum-lovers will get to explore Forest of Stone Steles Museum and The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses. Step out of Xi'an to go to Huayin and see Mountain Huashan Plank Trail, which is approximately 2 hours away. There's lots more to do: delve into the distant past at Tomb of Emperor Jingdi (Hanyangling), take in the dramatic scenery at Cuihua Mountain, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Xi'an Mosque.

You can fly from Beijing to Xi'an in 5.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or drive. June in Xi'an sees daily highs of 87°F and lows of 65°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 27th (Sat) so you can travel to Hong Kong.

Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Hsing Tian Kong and Taipei Confucius Temple. Take a break from the city and head to Yangmingshan National Park and Neipi Beach. Explore Taipei's surroundings by going to Meihua Lake (in Dongshan), Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) (in Ruifang) and Yilan Lover's Bay (in Wujie). There's much more to do: examine the collection at Lanyang Museum, admire the sheer force of Wufengchi Waterfall, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area, and don't miss a visit to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall.

In July, plan for daily highs up to 94°F, and evening lows to 80°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Fri) early enough to travel to Kyoto.

Traveling by flight from Taipei to Kyoto takes 8 hours. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 1 hour traveling from Taipei to Kyoto. Traveling from Taipei in July, you will find days in Kyoto are a bit cooler (89°F), and nights are about the same (76°F). Finish up your sightseeing early on the 18th (Sat) so you can catch the train to Tokyo.
