Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Step out of Ishigaki with an excursion to Canyoning & Rappelling Tours in Iriomote-jima--about 1h 50 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Kabira Bay, enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, take in panoramic vistas at Emerald no Umi o Miru Viewing Platform, and get outside with Yarabudake.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Himeji: Kurashiki (Ohara Museum of Art & Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter), Bizen (Irigyogyo Kyodo Kumiai Manaichi & Hattoji Furusatomura) and Shikoku Mura Village (in Takamatsu).
