One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Relax by the water at 49 Black Sand Beach and Richardson Beach Park. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Honaunau Bay and Waipi'o Valley. Change things up with these side-trips from Hilo: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Volcano Art Center & Kīlauea), Laupahoehoe Beach Park (in Laupahoehoe) and Waipio Na'alapa Trail (in Waimea). There's much more to do: explore the striking landscape at Kapoho Tide Pools, discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, step off the mainland to explore Coconut Island, and steep yourself in history at Puukohola National Historic Park.

In May in Hilo, expect temperatures between 82°F during the day and 67°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
