Walkable, small, and aesthetically charming, Kobe has served as Japan's first and premier international trading outpost since opening to trade with China in the mid-19th century.
Start off your visit on the 16th (Mon): soak in some Japanese tradition at Arima Onsen, thencontemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ikuta Shrine, thenvisit Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown), and finally visit Kobe Harborland.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Gion. Visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Sanjusangendo Temple for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center & Nara Park). There's lots more to do: explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, explore the world behind art at Kyoto National Museum, see the interesting displays at Kaleidoscope Museum of Kyoto, and browse the eclectic array of goods at Nishiki Market Shopping District.

Getting from Kobe to Kyoto by train takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. In December, daytime highs in Kyoto are °C, while nighttime lows are °C. On the 20th (Fri), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can take a train to Nagoya.

Kick off your visit on the 20th (Fri): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Hosho-in (Osu Kannon). Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 21st (Sat): examine the collection at Okageza, get to know the fascinating history of Ise Shrine Geku, thencontemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ise Grand Shrine, and finally steep yourself in history at Oharai-machi.

Take a train from Kyoto to Nagoya in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus.
